Ceiling Painting in Richmond

Roller marks, lap lines, and uneven texture stand out in raking light. We use the right roller for the surface and work systematically to avoid visible overlap lines.

On smooth plaster ceilings in period properties, preparation determines the finish. We fill, sand, and prime as required before the finish coats go on. Ceiling white is the standard choice, but we also paint ceilings in mid-tones and darker shades where the client wants a more dramatic effect.

Artex ceilings are common in Richmond properties built or refurbished in the 1970s and 1980s, including many 1930s semis in Whitton, Hampton, and East Sheen. Artex can be painted over, but the texture will remain.

If you want a smooth ceiling, the correct route is overskimming. We work regularly alongside trusted local plasterers who skim ceilings before we paint them. For painting over existing artex, we use a high-build paint or apply a sealing coat first for a more even result.

Original cornicing and ceiling roses in Georgian, Regency, and Victorian properties across Richmond are irreplaceable. They require fine brushwork rather than roller application near the edges — rolling into cornice profiles causes heavy paint build-up that fills the detail.

Georgian townhouses on Richmond Green and properties on Richmond Hill have ceiling heights of 3.5 to 4 metres. We use tower platforms or long-reach equipment depending on room size, and work by brush in thin coats to preserve fine plaster profiles.

Brown staining on ceilings is caused by water ingress from above — a leaking pipe, a failed roof detail, or a bathroom overflow. Painting over a water stain with standard emulsion never works; the stain bleeds through within weeks regardless of how many coats are applied.
