Exterior Painting Services
We cover the full range of exterior surfaces found on Richmond upon Thames properties, from Georgian brick and lime render to timber sash windows and roofline boards. Every house painting programme begins with a thorough site assessment.
Masonry and Rendered Walls
Period masonry across Richmond upon Thames covers a wide range of surfaces. Georgian brick in TW9 and TW10, lime render on listed cottages in Petersham, and modern sand-and-cement render on 1930s semis in Whitton and Hampton all require different products and preparation methods.
Listed cottages along Petersham Road and River Lane have lime-rendered exteriors that must not be sealed with modern masonry paint. We assess the render type at site visit and specify breathable lime-compatible or mineral-based coatings where required. We do not apply film-forming coatings to lime-rendered surfaces. For larger areas, see our dedicated masonry painting page.
Windows and Woodwork
Timber sash windows on Georgian and Victorian properties in Richmond often carry fifteen or twenty layers of paint. At some point the build-up affects the mechanism and joint quality. We assess every sash at the site visit and include stripping in the quote where it is needed.
Preparation on timber windows means stripping back to sound material, treating any rot, priming with a specialist timber primer, and applying durable exterior gloss or satin. For wood painting on fences, cladding, and garden structures, we provide a separate programme.
Fascias, Soffits, and Gutters
Roofline painting protects the timber and keeps the exterior looking complete. We work from scaffold or mobile access towers for three-storey properties — access is included in the quote. We do not work from ladders alone on tall Richmond Hill or Barnes period properties.
Gutters are inspected during the roofline programme. Where joints are leaking and causing water tracking down masonry, we advise on repairs before painting begins. Water damage behind the fascia or on the render below is identified early rather than painted over.
Front Door and Porch
A front door is the first thing a visitor sees. On a Georgian townhouse on The Terrace or a Victorian terrace in Twickenham TW1, the door and fanlight frame set the character of the whole exterior. We strip old paint where build-up has softened the moulding detail, then apply primer, undercoat, and two top coats as a minimum.
Brassware and letterplates are masked individually. For front door painting as a standalone commission, we visit and quote in isolation. For exterior door painting on garage or side access doors, these are included in the same programme.
Garden Walls and Outbuildings
Boundary walls, gate piers, and outbuildings need the same attention as the main facade. Period brick and lime-rendered garden walls in Kew and Richmond TW9 need breathable treatment, not standard masonry paint.
Where a deck painting or shed painting programme is part of the broader exterior scope, we include it in the same written quote. Fence painting on timber close-board or panel fencing is assessed for condition and treatment type at the site visit. For commercial painting on business premises, we also provide a dedicated service.
Garage Door Painting
Garage doors are part of the exterior and affect the kerb appeal of the whole property. We paint timber, metal, and composite garage doors as part of an exterior programme or as a standalone job. For full details, see our garage door painting service page. Call 020 4572 8995 to discuss.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We inspect every external surface, noting the surface type, existing coating condition, render integrity, and any biological growth or water damage.
2. Surface Preparation
We treat moss and algae with a mould treatment product and allow it to dwell before rinsing. Render is repaired where cracked or hollow. Timber is stripped to sound material.
3. Priming
Period masonry receives a breathable masonry primer. Bare timber receives a specialist timber primer. Each surface gets the primer appropriate to its material.
4. Painting
We monitor weather forecasts and plan application around dry windows. Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure and south-facing riverside properties receive a third coat.
5. Final Inspection
We inspect all surfaces in good light before leaving. Touch-ups are completed before the job closes. We walk through the finished work with you.
Exterior Painting Costs in London
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 020 4572 8995 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
Richmond upon Thames spans a wide property range. A Whitton 1930s semi is a very different exterior project from a Richmond Hill Georgian townhouse. Three things drive the price: surface area and height, surface condition and type, and the scope of woodwork.
Scaffold costs increase with height on three-storey townhouses. Lime render, cracked masonry, and timber in poor condition all require more preparation. Sash windows, fascias, soffits, and a front door add substantially where old paint needs stripping from original joinery.
Typical Price Ranges
- Whitton 1930s semi-detached (TW2, rendered walls, standard roofline): £2,200 to £3,500 for walls, fascias, soffits, and windows.
- Teddington Victorian semi (TW11, render or brick, sash windows and woodwork included): £2,800 to £4,500.
- Richmond Hill or Barnes Georgian townhouse (TW10 or SW13, breathable coating, full period woodwork programme): £4,500 to £8,000+.
